When people think about beautiful beach vacations in Mexico, they usually think about:turquoise water, luxury resorts, perfect beaches, and those glamorous underwater snorkeling pictures everyone posts online.
⨠And honestly?
That was EXACTLY what I thought too.
I went to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo with my kids fully convinced I was about to become:
elegant,
adventurous,
mysterious,
and effortlessly beautiful under the ocean. š
I imagined myself gracefully swimming through crystal-clear water while fish magically surrounded me like a Disney princess.
Reality?
Absolutely not.
š The moment I got underwater, I realized very quickly that the ocean and I were not emotionally aligned.
The pressure.The movement.The waves.The breathing.The endless floating.
It felt like my soul had disconnected from my body.
Meanwhile, my kids were probably having the time of their lives while I was down there questioning every decision that had brought me to that exact moment.
⨠And yesā¦I did touch the fish.
But I also touched rock bottom.
Literally and emotionally. š
The SECOND I got out of the water, I completely collapsed on the beautiful sand of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.
Gone.
Destroyed.
Finished.
I felt:
dizzy,
nauseous,
disoriented,
betrayed by the ocean,
and deeply humbled.
And just when I thought I was not going to survive the experienceā¦
š“ Like an actual angel sent directly from heavenā¦
A paleta man appeared.
⨠El señor de las paletas.
Pushing his little carrito across the beach at the exact moment my soul needed saving.
And thank GOODNESS we spoke the same language, if you know what I mean⦠because that is exactly how I ended up with my life-saving free paleta de horchata. š
And let me tell you something VERY important:
The paleta de agua de horchata that this man handed me was the greatest paleta I have ever tasted in my entire life.
And trust meā¦
š¦ I come from a family of paleteros in Puebla.
My family has owned neveras and sold paletas for YEARS.
So saying this publicly feels almost like betrayal.
Please donāt get offended, tĆos. š
But that paleta?
Life-changing.
One bite and suddenly:
I could breathe again,
the world came back,
my soul returned to my body,
and I regained the will to continue living.
⨠Recovery time:approximately 3 seconds.
Honestly miraculous.
š And somehow, that ridiculous, chaotic, hilarious moment became one of my favorite memories in Mexico.
Because thatās the thing about traveling:
Sometimes the best stories are not the glamorous ones you planned for social media.
Sometimes the best stories are the ones where life humbles you completelyā¦
ā¦and then saves you with a horchata paleta on a beach in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.
š²š½ Thank you, beautiful Mexico, for always giving me memories I could never invent even if I tried. "COMO MEXICO NO HAY 2" .. š¤
